my autumn picks

the weather's getting colder and the coffee is getting spicier. time to stay cozy with some music, movies, and more.

my favorite season has finally rolled in, bringing the best vibes along with it. take a moment to read about my picks of the month while sipping on a pumpkin spice latte. completely unironically, this is my favorite drink of all time.

this season also brings new beginnings with it; i've finally began pursuing a completely new life careerwise and locationwise and i am so excited to share more about it with you all soon.

with that in mind, here are a few things that i've been loving this season.

music:

in autumn, i feel like i really gravitate towards folky music. there's something incredible comforting about songs like that; they really do radiate a sort of warmth that we are deeply lacking after daylight savings. so, my current playlist really reflects that.

shakey graves has reentered my life, as he usually does during this time of year. specifically his songs "roll the bones", "built to roam" and "city in a bottle." he has such a distinct voice that definitely led me to loving bands like the moss and the backseat lovers.

as always, taylor swift has dominated my listening history. it's unfortunate that 1989tv has summery vibes, because it feels a little anachronistic for me to be listening to "blank space" right after a song by matt maltese. however, i am able to make an exception for "is it over now?", "clean"and "say don't go." folklore and evermore are absolutely appropriate for this season, so they both contribute to a huge portion of my playlist for the coming months.

i recently discovered tyke james, a delightful surprise as someone who cannot get enough of the moss' music. his songs eminate the same vibe as the moss', but he manages to add his own spin and signature. tyke james is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists, and i've been listening to "tracy arm" on repeat since the start of the month. his vocal performance is truly incredible and reminiscent of the kings of leon's voice in "sex on fire" with the oooOOOOoooohs. i don't know how else to describe it.

the black keys, typically, are featured on my playlist. specifically, songs from magic potion and brothers. on my drive back from LA, i decided to listen to magic potion all the way through and it was such a wonderful experience. i really felt transported to 8th grade where the black keys discography was like my security blanket and i could always revisit it when i needed some respite from my pubescence. songs like "the flame" and "modern times" are my favorites at the moment, as well as "unknown brother."

katie gregson-macleod managed to create one of the most beautiful and devastating songs i have ever listened to: "complex (demo)." as someone who rose to fame through tiktok, she has avoided being labeled as a one hit wonder with other songs that i have fallen in love with in her discography: "second single bed", "i'm worried it'll always be you" and "to be eighteen." she is able to write deeply personal and relatable songs that cut deep, an incredibly rare trait in up and coming musicians.

here is my playlist, in case you're interested in listening to my picks of the month and more!

food:

  • pumpkin spice lattes.

  • yeah that's it.

movies & tv:

sometimes i just watch movies to make myself cry (see: Books That Made Me Cry So Hard I Almost Threw Up).

this month, i decided to watch Up for that exact purpose and it did what it intended. as per usual, i took pictures chronicling the experience:

another movie i aboslutely adored and recommend to everyone is Theater Camp on hulu. oh my god, maybe one of the funniest movies i've watched in a while. it draws on a mocumentary style of filmmaking, not taking itself seriously at all while everyone manages to do an oscar-worthy performance of theater kids.

i also revisited an old favorite: how i met your mother (see: In Defense of the Season Finale of "How I Met Your Mother"). i was in dire need of a rewatch, and i'm really happy i did. it acted as perfect background noise for remote work days and lazy weekend afternoons.

another show that i didn't expect to love was gen v. i wasn't a huge fan of the boys, so i had low expectations for gen v. i ended up watching the entire thing in a day and a half! it is truly one of the best superhero shows, which is saying something considering marvel releases a new one every other week... so i highly recommend this to anyone who needs a palate cleanser from all the marvel brainrot that has been coming out on disney+ in the past year.

finally, i am so, so glad invincible is finally back. the second season is already doing an incredible job following up on the success of the first and i am always ready to watch a new episode on thursday nights. can you tell i'm a fan of superhero shows/movies?

thanks for reading! have a lovely fall and i'll see you in the next post.

love always,

maya(writeslotsofstuff)
